BMES COnference
As President of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) at the University of Cincinnati, my leadership journey has been both rewarding and formative. I entered the BMES conference with clear S.M.A.R.T. goals: enhancing networking and communication skills, expanding knowledge of biomedical engineering (BME) innovations, promoting UC’s research, and learning best practices in the field. These goals shaped my growth as a leader and my perspective as a Global Citizen Scholar.
A key goal was to improve my networking and communication skills. I aimed to connect with ten professionals from various BME sectors and engage in follow-up conversations with at least three. By the end of the conference, I connected with twelve professionals, gaining insights into diverse career paths and advice for navigating the evolving BME landscape. This enhanced my ability to build professional relationships and communicate strategically.
Another goal was to expand my knowledge of emerging BME technologies. I attended sessions on topics like wearable devices, AI in healthcare, and advancements in BME education. These sessions inspired me to share new knowledge through BMES newsletters and presentations, improving my ability to synthesize complex information. I also promoted UC’s research by highlighting six undergraduate researchers, resulting in valuable collaborations. This raised UC’s profile and provided students with exposure to new opportunities.
This experience reinforced the importance of fostering collaboration and inclusivity within BMES. By gathering insights on best practices, I identified trends such as interdisciplinary approaches to medical device design and the integration of AI in patient-specific solutions. These trends will inform future BMES initiatives, strengthening the organization’s role in promoting innovative, cross-disciplinary thinking. The conference underscored how global advancements in BME often result from collective efforts across disciplines and cultures, inspiring me to continue fostering collaboration and inclusivity in both my leadership and career.
